Food Aid By FreeMakan Ensures A Joyful Merdeka Celebration For Refugees

In an effort to ensure refugees and migrant workers in Malaysia were not left out, and thought of this Merdeka Day, FreeMakan once again collaborated with Creador Foundation to supply 205 grocery packs to refugees and migrants around the Klang Valley.

This round of delivery saw refugees and families from Myanmar and Afghanistan, Indonesian migrant workers, along with smaller groups of Thai and Vietnamese migrants receive grocery packs under FreeMakan. Community Mobiliser, DAWN, delivered these grocery packs on 30th August 2021.

With the increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases in smaller neighbourhoods throughout the nation, asylum-seekers residing in urban areas have been facing significant threats to their livelihoods due to loss of income and unemployment. To help ease their financial strain, FreeMakan, with the assistance of DAWN, organised the delivery of grocery packs to 6 identified areas populated by refugees and migrant workers – Klang, Selayang, Setapak, Genting Kelang, Gombak and Ampang.

With strict adherence to the current standards of procedures, and with safety measures in place, many refugee families were able to receive aid from the FreeMakan initiative without fear of discrimination or stigmatisation.
