Essential Clothing Delivered to 300 Flood Victims in Mannar & Kalpitiya
On December 3rd, essential clothing for 300 children and adults were purchased and delivered to families in Mannar and Kalpitiya, offering comfort and dignity to those who lost everything in the disaster.
The initiative was funded through donations mobilised by Uplift (Pertubuhan Bangkit), GiveBACk.my, BAC Education, and the Malaysian Ceylonese Congress (MCC), with the support of the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Malaysia. These organisations have been working together to mount a rapid and coordinated response to Sri Lanka’s call for aid following Cyclone Ditwah.
In the wake of the floods, hundreds of families in Mannar and Kalpitiya were forced to leave their homes with nothing more than what they could carry. Many lost not only their possessions, but also access to clean, dry clothing - an often overlooked necessity during disaster recovery.
To address this immediate need, the relief team delivered a curated set of clothing items, ensuring that support reached people of all ages:
- Sarongs for men,
- Kaftans for women
- Clothing for children
These items were purchased locally to support small traders and delivered directly to affected communities through Uplift's volunteer networks on the ground.
Volunteers reported that many recipients had been wearing the same garments for days due to lack of access to dry clothes, with children especially vulnerable to cold and damp conditions.
The distribution was designed to ensure equitable access, prioritising households with infants, elderly family members, and those who had suffered the greatest loss.
But our work is far from over. If you would like to help families recovering from the floods in Sri Lanka, contributions can be made here.
