Community-Led Aid Reaches Flood-Hit Families in Sri Lanka’s Kandy District
When Cyclone Ditwah unleashed torrential rains across Sri Lanka, triggering devastating floods and landslides, thousands of families were left reeling from the sudden destruction of their homes and livelihoods. Among the worst-hit were communities in the Kandy district, where families were displaced overnight and cut off from essential resources.
Responding to Sri Lanka’s urgent call for assistance, a coalition of Malaysian organisations swiftly mobilised to deliver life-saving support to those in need. Uplift (Pertubuhan Bangkit), GiveBACk.my, BAC Education, and the Malaysian Ceylonese Congress joined forces to launch an emergency community service fundraiser supported by the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Malaysia.
This united campaign channelled Malaysian generosity directly to families who needed it most. Through our partnership with Vanni Hope, local volunteers were able to coordinate rapid distribution despite challenging conditions on the ground.
On Saturday, December 3rd 2025, essential aid was successfully delivered to 40 flood-affected families in Kandy. Each family received a bundle of necessities designed to provide comfort, dignity, and immediate relief - including clothing, children’s toys, and household essentials to help them rebuild their daily lives after the floods.
For many parents who lost everything in the rising waters, receiving clothing and essentials offered a lifeline. For the children, the toys brought rare moments of joy amid uncertainty.
This humanitarian response reflects the strength of Malaysia–Sri Lanka ties and the enduring commitment of Malaysian communities to step forward in moments of global need. It also underscores the power of collective action: when NGOs, educational institutions, community groups, and diplomatic partners come together, relief becomes faster, wider, and more deeply felt.
As Sri Lanka continues its recovery efforts, Uplift, GiveBACk.my, BAC Education, and their partners reaffirm their commitment to supporting affected families, advocating for long-term resilience, and ensuring that those displaced by Cyclone Ditwah are not forgotten.
