Responding to Sri Lanka’s call for aid, Uplift (Pertubuhan Bangkit), GiveBACk.my, BAC Education Group, and the Malaysian Ceylonese Congress mobilised an emergency community fundraiser, supported by the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Malaysia, to send critical relief to some of the hardest-hit regions.

Working closely with Vanni Hope, an established community development organisation in Sri Lanka, the first round of aid distribution has already reached hundreds of vulnerable families displaced by widespread flooding, rising river levels, and unstable terrain.

Aid Delivered Across Nine Affected Regions

The coordinated relief efforts ensured that essential food supplies reached communities taking shelter in schools, temporary centres, and remote villages cut off by floodwaters. Among the beneficiaries were:

  • 60 families in Vantharamoolai village, Batticaloa district
  • Multiple shelters across the Kandy district
  • 51 families housed at the Karagoda Muslim School after losing homes to floods and landslides
  • 45 families in Kilinochchi district
  • Hard-hit communities in the Mannar district
  • Displaced families across Uva province, sheltering in local schools
  • Communities in the Kegalle district, where torrential rains forced mass evacuations
  • 139 families at Gowerakelle TV School, left homeless after large-scale landslides
  • 35 families in Mullaitivu district taking refuge at Kalvilankulam School

Each distribution provided essential food aid - lifelines for families who lost livelihoods, homes, and access to basic necessities almost overnight.

About Vanni Hope

Since its inception in 2016, Vanni Hope has worked across Sri Lanka to help communities break the cycle of poverty. Its programmes provide:

  • Access to clean water, nutritious food, and sanitation
  • Support for safe, stable housing
  • Safe, nurturing environments for children
  • Access to quality education, especially in underserved regions

The organisation’s deep community roots and trusted local networks made it an essential partner in this emergency response, particularly in remote or conflict-affected areas where access is often limited.
